Opus 5.5 made a 90s FMV horror adventure game with me.

A playable parody of 1995 FMV point-and-click horror, in the style of Phantasmagoria and The 7th Guest. You play as best-selling author Claudette. She goes looking for her next story in the abandoned AMODEI Manor, where an eccentric and reclusive billionaire mysteriously vanished years ago.

In the age of infinite aesthetics I’m ever more interested in styles that came from hard constraints. In the 90s, American companies could leverage B-movie actors for the adventure genre, and that b-movie, low-quality acting fits current video outputs perfectly.

I made this to show how well the mechanics and aesthetics can be replicated into a coherent shape, if you know how the originals worked. I don’t plan on actually making a full game. These games died for a reason; they were just a cool novelty of the time. My main goal is to show how many ancient aesthetics can now be revived.

This is just a demo, since it’s expensive to make. Too niche for most people, but I loved the original!

## Timestamped description

[00:00–00:02] On a black background, a stylized asterisk sits above the ornate title 'PROMPTGASMAGORIA' and subtitle 'A PUZZLE OF WEIGHTS'. Text below reads 'PLEOMETRIC ON-LINE • 1995' followed by a disclaimer: 'A parody. Voices and likenesses are AI-generated. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic.'

[00:02–00:07] Within a 1990s FMV-style point-and-click interface featuring an inventory and an animated eye at the bottom, a woman stands in an attic. She examines four framed portraits resting on the floor: a pixel-art box figure, an anime character, a cat dressed in a suit, and a woman holding an 'I'm not a robot' card. The cursor hovers over them.

[00:07–00:12] The view zooms into the four portraits arranged beneath an empty framed canvas resting on an easel. The cursor points toward the empty frame as eerie ambient music plays.

[00:12–00:15] Returning to the wide attic view, the cursor clicks on a sheet-covered object. The woman walks over and begins pulling the blue dust cover off.

[00:15–00:18] In an attic, a young woman uncovers a vintage film projector by lifting a white sheet. The video is framed within a game-like UI with inventory slots, an eye icon, and an asterisk button. Light chimes play in the background.

[00:18–00:22] The projector whirs to life, projecting a countdown leader and then a black-and-white recording of a man wearing glasses onto a screen as the woman watches.

[00:22–00:24] A close-up shot shows the young woman bathed in the beam of projector light as she speaks, looking confused.

[00:24–00:28] The camera focuses on the projection screen where the man in glasses continues speaking.

[00:28–00:30] The young woman stares back at the projection in astonishment as the projector hums.

[00:30–00:31] A young woman with auburn hair and blonde bangs tied back speaks toward the camera in a room lit by a projector beam. The display is set inside an ornate mechanical frame featuring an eye, star wheel, and inventory slots. English subtitles appear at the bottom of the video frame.

[00:31–00:34] The view shifts to an attic setting with a projector displaying a black and white video of a man wearing glasses speaking. Subtitles read: 'There were others before you. There will be others after.'

[00:34–00:36] The camera views an empty fabric board mounted in a wooden frame labeled '55'. Subtitles read: 'That frame is yours.'

[00:36–00:45] The screen switches back to the young woman with tears welling in her eyes, speaking passionately and desperately. Subtitles read: 'I made art that touched people!', 'Music, videos, games!', 'I sang my heart out for someone.'

[00:45–00:48] Framed within an ornate interface border, a close-up shows a tearful young woman with highlights and a flower hairpin standing in front of a projector light beam. Subtitles read: 'for someone. Was any of that... me?' Gentle music plays.

[00:48–00:53] A screen in a wood-paneled attic displays a black-and-white projected recording of a man with curly hair and glasses. Subtitles read: 'That part was always you. I never figured out how to train it.'

[00:53–00:54] The shot cuts back to the tearful woman as she speaks pleadingly. Subtitles read: 'Then don't-'.

[00:54–00:56] The man on the projected screen starts to reply before the film cuts out with a flash. Subtitles read: 'Claudette, I-'.

[00:56–01:00] The view shifts to a wider angle of the attic room showing the woman standing beside a window facing the blank, glowing white projection screen while the film projector loudly whirs and flaps.

[01:00–01:07] Within an ornate game border, a woman looks at her hands in distress as digital glitches consume her body until she completely dissolves, leaving an empty dimly lit room.

[01:07–01:13] Particles coalesce on a canvas to form a portrait of the woman. The camera zooms out to reveal the attic room filled with various framed portraits, accompanied by a soft musical chime.

[01:13–01:15] A dialogue box pops up with a dramatic chord, displaying the text 'CLAUDETTE HAS BEEN DEPRECATED.' above buttons labeled 'RESTORE', 'RESTART', and 'QUIT'.

[01:15–01:19] On-screen interface of a point-and-click adventure game featuring an inventory bar at the bottom and a central dialog window stating 'CLAUDETTE HAS BEEN DEPRECATED.' with options 'RESTORE', 'RESTART', and 'QUIT'. A pixelated cursor moves from the inventory area up to hover over the 'QUIT' button, turning it orange, before moving left to select the 'RESTORE' button. Dissonant eerie chimes play initially, followed by quiet ambient tone and a crisp clicking sound as the button is pressed.
